Ahhh…Georgia Politics.
While there is nothing quite as exhilarating (or important, for that matter) as local REAL Political happenings & while the national level certainly brims w/ excitement, for my money there’s just nothing better, at least in our neck of the woods, than the statewide stuff.
While the races for Governor, Secretary of State & the US 10th Congressional GOP primaries have taken up most attention, I find the Lt Governor’s race interesting.
Almost four years ago, Geoff Duncan ran a very nasty race w/ documentation of a crap load of outside, dark money (the leftover money from a former state house member?).
Two years in, and he basically committed political suicide by going all in as a GOP Never Trumper.
With Duncan smartly not running that leads to an open, non-incumbent race that has grabbed the attention of maybe a couple of political watchers & a few who’ve already thrown their hats into the ring (though there is a clear-cut favorite to win); and while the Dems think they have a good shot at flipping this constitutional office (and a much more crowded field for the primary at the moment), we’ll only be covering the red side in this piece.
The odds-on favorite would definitely be Butch Miller. A longtime state senator & a self-described “Christian, Father, Husband & Small Business owner,” Miller apparently has the backing of possibly both wings of the GA GOP & definitely has the contacts & money sources to win the Republican primary here in a few months.
Some are possibly thinking we might see a late entrant or two while the only other declared candidates are Mack McGregor & Jeanne Seaver.
If qualifying ended today, both of the latter mentions would likely have a steep road ahead; however, Seaver - to me - is someone who could possibly catch some traction as the Trump/2nd Amendment/Conservative Activist outsider who could frame a pretty nice juxtaposition vis-a-vis Miller w/ he being portrayed as the establishment/RINO type (not saying I’m agreeing w/ that sentiment, just saying…)
I still think a latecomer w/ name recognition & fundraising potential will declare for this race soon.
Guess we’ll see.
As always, thanks for reading.
